Agnes
Agimo was born in the Kaberamaido
District in Eastern Uganda. Agnes was
one of 9 children and she was raised by
her older sister. She now lives in the
capital of Uganda: Kampala. Agnes
currently works in a craft shop, and in
her spare time, she makes beads to raise
income for her schooling. She gathers
with other young women who are also
trying to pay their school fees. “We
make them so we can achieve our goals in
life. |

Some of these women
are AIDS widows, some of them have AIDS, and many of
them are caring for orphan children—often in
addition to several of their own. They are all
trying to support their families and make ends meet.
The women are part of a sustainability program run
by AOET (AIDS Orphans Education Trust) a non-profit, Uganda-based
organization working throughout East Africa to
support orphans and the families who foster them
with schools, medical clinics, HIV outreach
programs, family villages, and sustainability
training. The profits earned from selling the beaded
jewelry give these mothers and grandmothers a better
chance of meeting their family's most fundamental
needs, such as food, clean water, and basic medical
care.
